The first surah revealed at Madinah, largely during the initial two years after the Hijrah. It addresses the Children of Israel, inviting them to the final Messenger; lays down the social, economic and legal foundations of the new Muslim community (prayer, fasting, zakat, family law, prohibition of riba); and announces the change of the Qiblah — the appointment of the Muslim ummah as the new bearer of Allah's guidance.
