By the dawn

2

وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرࣲ‏

and the ten nights

3

وَٱلشَّفۡعِ

and the even and the odd

4

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَسۡرِ

and by the night when it departs

5

هَلۡ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمࣱ لِّذِي

Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding

6

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad

7

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ

of Iram, known for their lofty columns

8

ٱلَّتِي لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ

the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world

9

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُواْ بِٱلۡوَادِ

And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley

10

وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِي

And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs

11

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوۡاْ فِي

who transgressed in the countries of the world

12

فَأَكۡثَرُواْ فِيهَا ٱلۡفَسَادَ

spreading in them much corruption

13

عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّكَ عَذَابٍ

Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement

14

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلۡمِرۡصَادِ

Truly your Lord is ever watchful

15

فَأَمَّا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكۡرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَكۡرَمَنِ

As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.”

16

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَهَٰنَنِ

But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.”

17

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا تُكۡرِمُونَ

But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably

18

وَلَا عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ

and do not urge one another to feed the poor

19

وَتَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكۡلࣰ ا لَّمࣰّ ا

and greedily devour the entire inheritance

20

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡمَالَ حُبࣰّ ا جَمࣰّ ا

and love the riches, loving them ardently

21

كَلَّآۖ إِذَا ٱلۡأَرۡضُ دَكࣰّ ا دَكࣰّ ا

But no; when the earth is ground to powder

22

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلۡمَلَكُ صَفࣰّ ا صَفࣰّ ا

and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels

23

وَجِاْيٓءَ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بِجَهَنَّمَۚ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ

and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be

24

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَيَاتِي

He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!”

25

فَيَوۡمَئِذࣲ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدࣱ‏

Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise

26

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدࣱ‏

and Allah will bind as none other can bind

27

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلۡمُطۡمَئِنَّةُ

(On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul

28

ٱرۡجِعِيٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةࣰ مَّرۡضِيَّةࣰ‏

Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord)

29

فَٱدۡخُلِي فِي عِبَٰدِي

So enter among My (righteous) servants

30

وَٱدۡخُلِي جَنَّتِي

and enter My Paradise.”
